Marathon Motors Engineering, Plc. is a prominent joint venture between the South Korean automotive giant Hyundai Motor Company and Ethiopian long-distance runner Haile Gebrselassie. History
Founded in 2009, Marathon Motors Engineering was established as a result of a partnership between Hyundai Motor Company and Haile Gebrselassie, a former ethiopian long-distance runner. The company made its debut at a press conference during the presentation of the Haile Resort in Awasa. Marathon Motors started assembling vehicles locally in Ethiopia, with a plant located in Nifas Silk-Lafto, Addis Ababa. This assembly plant, inaugurated in February 2019,[2] in July 2020, the company began assembling electric vehicles, including the Hyundai Ioniq.[3]
