Joseph Samuel Nye Jr. (born January 19, 1937) is an American political scientist, writer and politician. He was born in South Orange, New Jersey. A neoliberal and Democrat, he is best known for his 1977 book Power and Interdependence and for his theories and explanations between soft and hard power in the international political scale.

Nye was Assistant Secretary of Defense for International Security Affairs for President Bill Clinton from 1994 to 1995. Before, he was Chair of the National Intelligence Council from 1993 to 1994.^[1]
