Jessie Buckley (born December 1989) is an Irish actress and singer. She won a Golden Globe Award, BAFTA Award, Screen Actors Guild Award and the Academy Award for Best Actress for her role as Agnes Shakespeare in Hamnet (2025).[2][3]
Buckley has won a Laurence Olivier Award in 2022 and a BAFTA Award for her role as Rose-Lynn Harlan in Wild Rose (2018). In 2019, Buckley appeared as Lyudmilla Ignatenko in the HBO historical drama mini-series Chernobyl.
Buckley was nominated for an Academy Award for her role as Young Leda in The Lost Daughter (2021).
Early life
Jessie Buckley was born in December 1989 in Killarney, County Kerry,[4] to Marina (née Cassidy) and Tim Buckley.[5] She has a younger brother and three younger sisters.[4] She is the great-granddaughter of Irish republican Madge Clifford.[6] Buckley studied at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA). She graduated in January 2013.[7]
Career
In May 2023, it was announced that Buckley would star with Paul Mescal in Chloé Zhao's historical drama Hamnet.[8] Buckley's role as Agnes Shakespeare received strong reviews.[9][10] Buckley won the award for Best Actress in a Drama at the Golden Globes for the role.[11] Buckley additionally won the Critics' Choice Movie Award for Best Actress,[12] the Screen Actors Guild Award,[13] and the BAFTA Award,[14] becoming the first Irish actress to win for Leading Actress at all four ceremonies. Buckley also won the Academy Award for Best Actress, the first Irish winner of that award.[15][16]
Personal life
Buckley lived in Norfolk, England.[17] She married Freddie Sorensen, a mental health worker in mid-2023.[18] In 2025, she gave birth to their daughter.[19][20]
