Jeffrey O'Neill (born February 23, 1976) is a Canadian broadcaster and former professional ice hockey right winger. He played parts of 11 seasons in the National Hockey League (NHL). He played for the Hartford Whalers, Carolina Hurricanes, and Toronto Maple Leafs.

After retiring, O'Neill joined The Sports Network and became a sports broadcaster and analyst. He is also known by the nickname "O-Dog" and co-hosts OverDrive on TSN Radio 1050 alongside Bryan Hayes and former player Jamie McLennan.

Career

Before playing in the NHL, O'Neill played parts of threew seasons with the Guelph Storm of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL). He had a successful time with the Storm. He finished his rookie season, scoring 32 goals and recording 47 assists for 79 points. He was awarded the Emms Family Award as OHL Rookie of the Year for his efforts.[1]

He was drafted 5th overall by the Hartford Whalers in the 1994 NHL entry draft. On October 7, 1995, O'Neill made his NHL debut in a 2–0 win against the New York Rangers.[2] On October 16, O'Neill scored his first NHL goal against Mike Richter in a 7–5 win against the New York Rangers.[3] He remained with the team when they relocated to become the Carolina Hurricanes. On August 6, 2000, O'Neill signed a contract extension to stay with the Hurricanes.[4] On June 26, 2002, O'Neill signed a two-year contract to stay with the Hurricanes.[5] On June 29, 2004, O'Neill signed a one-year contract to stay with the Hurricanes.[6]

On July 30, 2005, the Hurricanes traded O'Neill to the Toronto Maple Leafs in exchange for a 2006 conditional fourth-round draft pick.[7] O'Neill decided to join the Maple Leafs to be closer to his family after his brother was killed in a car accident.[8] He played parts of two seasons with the Leafs. O'Neill retired from playing professional ice hockey in 2007.

Broadcasting

After retiring, O'Neill joined The Sports Network and works as a sports broadcaster and analyst for TSN Hockey games. He is also known by the nickname "O-Dog" and co-hosts OverDrive on TSN Radio 1050 alongside Bryan Hayes and former player Jamie McLennan.[9]
