Jaap Staal (10 October 1932 – 8 August 2024) was a Dutch chess player.[1]
Staal was born in Amsterdam. He learned to play chess from his father. In 1950 he was youth champion of Amsterdam. Later he played for Charlois I, which was champion of the Netherlands in 1969 and 1973. In 1954 he switched to correspondence chess and in 1963 he became champion of the Netherlands. In 1986 he became ICCF chess master. He was still active in chess until old age and in 2003 he became senior champion of the Rotterdam Chess Federation (RSB).[2][3]
Staal was deputy headmaster and teacher of Dutch language and history at the pre-university education in Brielle and was an author.[4] He died in Zutphen on 8 August 2024 at the age of 91.[5]
