The Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur (IIT Kharagpur) is a public technical university in Kharagpur, West Bengal, India. It was the first Indian Institute of Technology to be established and was founded in 1951.[1] IIT Kharagpur is one of the top engineering colleges in India and is recognized worldwide.[2]
History
IIT Kharagpur was established in 1951 to develop technical education in India. It was modeled after the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the United States.[3] The institute started its journey in the Hijli Detention Camp, a historical site.[4]
Campus
IIT Kharagpur has one of the largest campuses among IITs, covering an area of 2,100 acres (8.5 km²). The campus includes classrooms, hostels, sports facilities, and research centers.[5]
