Hillbilly Elegy: A Memoir of a Family and Culture in Crisis is a bestselling 2016 memoir by J. D. Vance about his early life in the Appalachian region , his family and the social and economic problems of his hometown of Middletown, Ohio .
The book reached the top of The New York Times Best Seller list in August 2016[ 1] and January 2017.[ 2]
In 2020 it was made into a movie directed by Ron Howard and starring Glenn Close and Amy Adams . The movie was received with mixed reviews .[ 3]
