Gerdau S.A. is a Brazilian steel company based in Porto Alegre. It is one of the largest producers of long steel in the Americas. The company makes steel using mini mills, integrated mills, and direct reduced iron plants.[1]

Most of Gerdau's steel is made from recycled scrap. The company sells products in Brazil, North America, and other markets.

History

Gerdau was founded in 1901 by João Gerdau as a nail manufacturing business. Later, the company expanded into steel production. In 1948, it bought its first steel mill.[2]

In 1967, Gerdau acquired a mini mill in São Paulo. In 1969, it changed its name to Metalúrgica Gerdau S.A. The company became publicly traded in 1970.

During the 1980s and 1990s, Gerdau expanded in Brazil and abroad through several acquisitions. It entered Canada in 1989 and the United States in 1999. In the following years, it bought several steel assets in North America.[3][4]

In 2019, Gerdau formed Gerdau Graphene with the Graphene Engineering and Innovation Centre at the University of Manchester.[5] In 2024, the company sold assets in Colombia and the Dominican Republic. Later in 2024, it bought Dale's Recycling in the United States.[6] In 2025, it bought the minority interests in Gerdau Summit.[7]
