The long-footed marsupial frog, Pastaza marsupial frog or rana marsupial de pies largos (Gastrotheca longipes) is a frog. It lives in Ecuador and Peru.[2][3][1]
Body
This frog has a large, strong body. The adult male frog is 61.2–70.8 mm long from nose to rear end and the adult female frog is 70.0–88.3 mm. The skin of the frog's back and sides is green with some white marks. Some frogs have brown or white color near the eyes and jaw. The upper lip of the mouth is white and the lower lip is green. The legs are green with white marks. The bottoms of the feet are green in color. The frog's leg bones are green in color too. The knees have brown marks on them. The throat and chest are cream-yellow in color. The belly is cream-white or green with cream-white marks. The iris of the eye is white with brown lines.[3]
Name
Scientists gave this frog the Latin name longipes from longus for "long" and pes for "feet."[3]
Home
This frog lives in the treetops. People see them at night on bushes and trees. It does not live in places that human beings have changed. Scientists have seen the frog between 185 and 954 m (607 and 3,130 ft) above sea level.[2][1]
Scientists have seen the frog in protected places: Santiago-Comaina Reserved Zone of Peru and Ecuador, Tiputini Biodiversity Station, and Yasuní National Park.[1]
Young
The female frog carries the egg in a bag of skin on her back. Scientists have seen 15-17 eggs in a female's bag at a time. The eggs are big for frog eggs, 10.9 mm across. Scientists say that this frog has fewer, bigger eggs than other frogs, because it hatches as a small froglet and not a swimming tadpole.[3][1]
Danger
Scientists from the IUCN say the frogs are not in danger of dying out. In some places, people change the places where the frogs live to get wood to use and make farms. Scientists are not sure whether the disease chytridiomycosis can hurt this frog.[1]
