Ga Hee-ah, she was a concubine of King Taejong of the Joseon Dynasty, Yi Bang-won, and a native of Bocheon, Joseon. Due to Taejong's favor, she became a member of the royal harem and was given the title of Princess Hyeseon, also known as Princess Gai.[1]
Life
Ga Hee-ah was a Kisaeng from Bocheon. Her exceptional beauty and talent attracted the attention of the royal family and meritorious officials. She and six others aged 15-16, were selected by King Taejong to dance at the palace banquets, and she thus became a maid in the Myeongbin Palace.[2] Ga Hee-ah performed songs and dances at the banquets, and King Taejong, captivated by her talent, took her as a concubine.[3] He also bestowed upon her the clothing used by officials of Seoul.[4] In 1414, Ga Hee-ah was granted the title of Princess Hyeseon. Ga Hee-ah also known by her official title as Princess Yi, had no children with King Taejong.[1][5]
Event
In 1415, Ga Hee-ah was embroiled in a bribery scandal. Yeom Chi-yong, the former governor of Hwangju, after losing a lawsuit concerning his slaves, went to Min Moo-hui, the prefect of Gongan, to appeal his case. Yeom Chi-yong mentioned that he and Seo Cheol were very wealthy and that he had bribed Ga Hee-ah, a concubine of King Taejong, and Ha Yeon, the chief councilor, who belonged to the Naejansa Temple. Min Moo-hui relayed this to Grand Prince Chungnyeong, who in turn relayed it to King Taejong. King Taejong was furious and ordered an investigation, imprisoning Min Moo-hui, Yeom Chi-yong, Kwon Ji-ji, and others on charges of spreading dissenting opinions.[1][6]
