GFL Environmental Inc. (known as Green For Life) is a Canadian company that deals with waste management. They are headquartered in Vaughan, Ontario. GFL Environmental does business across North America.
The company was first created by Patrick Dovigi in Vaughan, Ontario in 2007. Dovigi had first played as a goaltender with the Erie Otters of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) and was drafted by the Edmonton Oilers in the 1997 NHL entry draft.[1] He decided to instead focus on business and retired from professional ice hockey. After starting GFL, they acquired National Waste Services, Direct Line Environmental, and Enviro West before later earning a $186-million, nine-year contract to manage the waste of 155,000 homes in Toronto.[2] In February 2016, the company acquired Services Matrec Inc. (Matrec) for $800 million. It was the largest purchase in GFL's history.[3]
In October 13, 2016, the company decided to expand into the United States after acquiring Rizzo Environmental Services based in Michigan.[4]
On March 2, 2020, GFL decided to take their company public and began trading on the Toronto Stock Exchange (TSX).[5] In 2025, GFL sold its division for environmental services for $8 billion.[6] Their subsidiary Green Infrastructure Partners was also restructured by Energy Capital Partners for $4.25 billion.[7]
