Franciszek Macharski (20 May 1927 – 2 August 2016)[ 1] was a Polish cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church . He served as the Archbishop of Kraków from 1978 to 2005, succeeding Karol Wojtyła, who became Pope John Paul II .
Early life and education
Franciszek Macharski was born in Kraków , Poland. He was ordained a priest on 2 April 1950 by Cardinal Stefan Sapieha . He completed his theological studies in Kraków at the Jagiellonian University .[ 1] [ 2]
Ecclesiastical career
In 1978, Macharski was appointed Archbishop of Kraków by Pope John Paul II. He was consecrated on 6 January 1979 by Pope John Paul II himself. Later that year, on 30 June, he was elevated to the rank of cardinal .[ 1] [ 3]
Retirement and Death
Macharski retired as Archbishop of Kraków in 2005 and was succeeded by Stanisław Dziwisz . He passed away on 2 August 2016 in Kraków and was buried in the Wawel Cathedral .[ 1] [ 2] [ 3]
