Evan Rodrigues (born July 28, 1993) is a Canadian professional ice hockey forward. He currently plays for the Florida Panthers of the National Hockey League (NHL). He has also played for the Buffalo Sabres, Pittsburgh Penguins, and Colorado Avalanche.
Rodrigues is two-time Stanley Cup champion, winning back-to-back with the Panthers in 2024 and 2025.
Career
Before playing in the NHL, Rodrigues played parts of three seasons with the Boston Terriers of Hockey East. He had a successful time with the Terriers, being named to a Hockey East Second-Team All-Star twice during his tenure there.[1]
He was not drafted by an NHL team. On April 22, 2015, Rodrigues signed a two-year entry-level contract to join the Buffalo Sabres of the National Hockey League (NHL). In doing so, he joined his then former Terriers teammate Jack Eichel.[2] He was immediately sent down to play for their AHL-affiliate Rochester Americans. On April 8, 2016, the Sabres called Rodrigues up and he made his NHL debut in a 4–1 loss against the Columbus Blue Jackets.[3] The next day, he had a two-point night after he scored his first NHL goal against Christopher Gibson and assisted on the overtime Brian Gionta goal in a 4–3 win against the New York Islanders.[4] On July 27, 2017, Rodrigues signed a two-year, $1.3 million contract to stay with the Sabres.[5] On July 25, 2019, Rodrigues signed a one-year, $2 million extension after arbitration to remain with the Sabres.[6]
On February 24, 2020, the Sabres traded Rodrigues along with Conor Sheary to the Pittsburgh Penguins in exchange for Dominik Kahun.[7] He played parts of three seasons with the Penguins, scoring 27 goals and recording 31 assists.
On August 25, 2020, the Penguins traded Rodrigues along with David Warsofsky, Filip Hållander and a 2020 first-round draft pick to the Toronto Maple Leafs in exchange for Kasperi Kapanen, Jesper Lindgren and Pontus Åberg.[8] He never played a game for the Leafs because he could not agree to terms of a contract with the team. On October 9, 2020, Rodrigues signed a one-year, $700,000 contract to rejoin the Penguins.[9]
On September 12, 2022, Rodrigues signed a one-year, $2 million contract to join the Colorado Avalanche.[10] He played one season with the Avalanche, scoring 16 goals and recording 23 assists.
On July 2, 2023, Rodrigues signed a four-year, $12 million contract to join the Florida Panthers.[11] He helped the Panthers during the playoffs. They defeated the Boston Bruins, Toronto Maple Leafs, and Carolina Hurricanes. They were eventually defeated by the Vegas Golden Knights four games to one in the Finals.[12] The next season, he helped the Panthers in the Stanley Cup playoffs as they defeated the Tampa Bay Lightning, Boston Bruins, and New York Rangers. They eventually went on to defeat the Edmonton Oilers four games to three in the Finals to win the first Stanley Cup in Panthers history.[13] The next season, he helped the team reach their second-straight Finals, as the Panthers again defeated the Oilers four games to two to win back-to-back Stanley Cups.[14]
