Location of Djelfa

Djelfa (Arabic: الجلفة) is a city in Algeria. It is the capital of Djelfa Province. It is about 300 km far away from the capital of Algeria, Algiers. According to the 2024 census, it's population is approximately 520,000. It lies more than 1,200 meters above sea level and is a plateau region with cold winters and hot, dry summers, which are generally milder than those in coastal areas due to the surrounding green forest belt.

Urban and population expansion began in Djelfa in the early 1980s, and the pace of population growth accelerated during the 1990s.

Among its most famous and oldest neighborhoods are Bir Arab and Al-Sa’adat, followed by Al-Burj, which is close to the city center and home to most of Djelfa’s original residents.

The city of Djelfa is home to a university, a municipal museum, a museum dedicated to the Mujahideen, an Islamic cultural center, and a national high commission for steppe agriculture. It is also distinguished by the presence of several historical landmarks and buildings, such as Dar al-Baroud, al-Hajra al-Mabasia, Bab al-Sharif, the main post office, the Ben Dnidina Mosque, the downtown market, the museum (formerly a church), the Friday Mosque, the Abd al-Rahman ibn Awf Mosque, and the Si Belkacem Belharash Mosque - the oldest mosque in the region, dating back to 1877—as well as the Sen al-Ba forests and the zoo.
