The Department of Government Efficiency [ a] (DOGE ) is a planned commission announced by Donald Trump , the current president-elect of the United States , for his second term as U.S. president . It will be led by Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy . It will not be an official government department.
Musk said that he believes that the commission could lower the U.S. federal budget by $2 trillion. Jamie Dimon , CEO of JPMorgan Chase , has supported the idea.
Despite the name, it is unlikely to be a federal executive department , which are created through an act of Congress, and is more likely to be part of the Executive Office of the President or a presidential commission working closely with the Office of Management and Budget .[ 1] [ 2]
Trump said that the commission's work will end no later than July 4, 2026, the 250th anniversary of the signing of the U.S. Declaration of Independence .[ 3] [ 4]
