Cherokee /ˈtʃɛrəkˌiː/[2] (Cherokee: ᏣᎳᎩ, romanized: Tsalagi) is a census-designated place (CDP) in Swain and Jackson counties in North Carolina. It is in the Qualla Boundary area.[3] Cherokee is located near the intersection of U.S. Routes 19 and 441. It had a population of 2,195 at the 2020 census. It is the capital of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians.

The town is also a place that people like to go to on vacation. It has a lot of campgrounds, motels, and hotels for visitors to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, with a major entrance to the park in the town. It is connected to Gatlinburg, Tennessee by U.S. Route 441. Cherokee is the southern end of the Blue Ridge Parkway. The Oconaluftee River is a place people go to for water sports. The Oconaluftee Indian Village has the outdoor drama Unto These Hills, which a lot of people liked.
