The Cerrado (Portuguese pronunciation: [seˈʁadu], [sɛˈʁadu]) is a large ecoregion of tropical savanna in eastern Brazil. Most of it is in the states of Goiás, Mato Grosso do Sul, Mato Grosso, Tocantins, Minas Gerais, and the Federal District. The main areas of the Cerrado biome are the Brazilian highlands (the Planalto). The main habitat types of the Cerrado are made of forest savanna, wooded savanna, park savanna and gramineous-woody savanna. The Cerrado also has savanna wetlands and gallery forests. It is the second largest of Brazil's major habitat types, after the Amazonian rainforest. The Cerrado takes up 21 percent of the country's land area. Small parts of the Cerrado are in Paraguay and Bolivia.
