Cape Jervis is a small town in South Australia. It is near the west end of the Fleurieu Peninsula, about 88 km (55 mi) south of Adelaide, the state capital. The town is close to the southern end of the Main South Road.[10]
The town is named after a nearby headland called Cape Jervis, which also has the Aboriginal name Parewarangk.[11] The headland was named by Matthew Flinders on March 23, 1802, after John Jervis, 1st Earl of St Vincent.[12]
Cape Jervis looks out over three bodies of water: Gulf St Vincent, Investigator Strait, and Backstairs Passage. At the headland, there is a lighthouse and a port. The port is used by Kangaroo Island SeaLink, which runs the ferry to Penneshaw on Kangaroo Island.[13][14][15]
In 2016, about 264 people lived in Cape Jervis.[2]
Cape Jervis is the starting point of the Heysen Trail, a long walking path that goes 1,200 km (750 mi) to Parachilna Gorge in the Flinders Ranges.[16] Visitors to Cape Jervis can enjoy places like Deep Creek Conservation Park, Talisker Conservation Park, and two nearby beaches: Morgan's Beach, where the remains of a trawler called Ellen can be seen, and Fisheries Beach, where there are old whaling station remains.[13] Cape Jervis is also a popular place to start fishing trips.[13]
The town is part of the federal division of Mayo, the state electoral district of Mawson, and the local government area called the District Council of Yankalilla.
