James Calvin Cunningham III (born August 6, 1973) is an American politician, lawyer, and veteran. He was the North Carolina State Senator from the 23rd district from 2001 to 2003. He is a member of the Democratic Party.
He had an unsuccessful primary campaign for the United States Senate in the 2010 election. In 2020, Cunningham became the Democratic nominee in the 2020 Senate election.[1][2][3]
In October 2020, it was revealed that Cunningham had an affair early in the year and sent sexual text messages to his mistress.[4] This was controversial and affected his polling lead against U.S. Senator Thom Tillis weeks before the election.[4] Cunningham lost the election to Tillis on November 10.
