Bromomethane

Bromomethane, also called methyl bromide, is a chemical compound of carbon, hydrogen, and bromine. It is the simplest organobromine compound, and one of the most common in nature.[1] It has the chemical formula CH3Br.

Bromomethane is used as a pesticide, but is also a Class I ozone-depleting substance, so its usage is limited by the Montreal Protocol. Industrial production of methyl bromide dropped from 70 thousand tonnes in 1999 to 10 thousand tonnes in 2018.[2]

Chemistry

Like related methyl halides, bromomethane is an electrophile and methylating agent.
