Bilibili, sometimes referred to as BSite, is a Chinese online video sharing platform based in Shanghai. Users can upload, view, and comment on videos, including through danmu (弹幕, "bullet curtain").[1]

The videos hosted on the platform contains a variety of themes, including anime, music, dance, science and technology, movies, drama, fashion, and video games. Since the mid-2010s, Bilibili has expanded beyond its original audience, focused on animation, comics, and games, and has become a very popular streaming platform serving videos on demand.[1]

Most notably, Bilibili is known for the danmu commenting system which displays scrolling comments from users as the video plays.[1]

History

Founding and early development (2009-2013)

During the first half of 2009, there was some internal factional struggles in a similar video sharing website named AcFun. Because of this, the website had experienced some server downtime that lasted around a month and issues with users regarding submission approval time. An early AcFun user named Xu Yi (Chinese: 徐逸; pinyin: Xú Yì), had left the platform during that period and took the time and its shortcomings to create "Mikufans.cn" on June 26, 2009. The website was a fandom community website based around the popular figure Hatsune Miku.[2] As the website grew in popularity, the main focus of the website shifted to a video sharing platform and launched on January 14, 2010 under the new name, Bilibili; which was a nickname of the protagonist in the anime A Certain Scientific Railgun, Mikoto Misaka. Bilibili references the anime throughout the website and celebrates Mikoto Misaka's birthday on the homepage every year on the 2nd of May. [3]

Leadership change and expansion (2014-2018)

In November 2014, Chen Rei (Chinese: 陈睿) was appointed as CEO and chairman of the board of Bilibili.[4] Chen was an early member of Bilibili and started watching anime on the platform in 2010. He met Xu Yi in 2014, who convinced him to become one of the company's earliest investors. He was the fifth member of the company.[5]

In October 2016, Bilibili announced it would become the sponsor of the Shanghai Sharks basketball team, whose name was later changed to Shanghai Bilibili, because they both originated from Shanghai.[6][7] In December 2017, Bilibili purchased an e-sports team originally called IM which played League of Legends under the new name: Bilibili Gaming (BLG).[8][9] In March 2018, Bilibili had filed for an initial public offering of up to US$400 million on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE).[10] The company listed on the NASDAQ on March 28, 2018.[11]

Sony, venture into original programming, and second stock listing (2019–2021)

On March 23, 2019, Bilibili announced that they had partnered with Sony-owned American anime distributor Funimation to jointly license anime titles for both the U.S. and Chinese markets.[12] On April 9, 2020, Sony Corporation of America announced it would acquire a 4.98% minority stake in Bilibili for US$400 million, valuing the company at US$8 billion.[13]

Later that year, Bilibili began its foray into original programming by joining the production of a fourth season for Informal Talks. In August 2020, Bilibili produced the show Rap for Youth.[14]

In September 2020, the company launched the BiliBili Video Satellite.[15] On February 3, 2021, Bilibili announced that it had acquired Shanghai Yarun Culture Communications Co., Ltd, the parent company of the animation studio Haoliners Animation League and its subsidaries.[16] On March 23, 2021, it was reported that Bilibili would raise US$2.6 billion on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange (HKEX).[17] It would be the company's secondary listing, as it is also public on the NASDAQ in New York City. On March 29, 2021, Bilibili was listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange at an opening price of HK$790.[18] In the third quarter of 2022, the number of average monthly active users reached about 332.6 million, including 28.5 million paying users.[19]
