It is the largest and the southernmost of the arrondissements of the department, with an area of 2,884.9 km2 (1,114 sq mi),[1] and a population of 74,614 inhabitants; its population density is of 25.9 inhabitants/km².[2]
History
When the arrondissements were created on 17 February 1800, Oloron-Sainte-Marie was one of them in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques department.[3]
Since 10 September 1926, some parts of the dissolved arrondissements Mauléon and Orthez were added to the arrondissement of Oloron-Sainte-Marie.
Geography
The arrondissement is bordered to the north and east by the arrondissement Pau, to the southeast by the Hautes-Pyrénées department, to the south by Spain, and to the west by the arrondissement Bayonne.

Cantons
After the reorganisation of the cantons in France,[4] cantons are not subdivisions of the arrondissements so they could have communes that belong to different arrondissements.
