When the Saône-et-Loire department was created on 17 February 1800, the arrondissement of Charolles was part of that original department.[2]
Geography
The arrondissement of Charolles is bordered to the north by the arrondissement of Autun, to the northeast by the arrondissement of Chalon-sur-Saône and to the east by the arrondissement of Mâcon. It is also bordered by three departments of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region: the Rhône department to the southeast, the Loire department to the south and the Allier department to the west.
It is in the southwestern corner of the department, with an area of 2,500.3 km2 (965 sq mi),[3] the largest in area of the department. It has 99,381 inhabitants and a population density of 39.7 inhabitants/km².[4]
