Đorđe Popović-Daničar (Bukovac, 1. novembra 1832. - Beograd, 7. aprila 1914.) je bio srpski novinar, prevodilac i književnik.[1]

Život

Uređivao je časopise Sedmicu, Srpski dnevnik i Danicu. Prvi broj "Danice" je izašao 20. februara 1860, a posljednji 20. augusta. 1872. Izlazio je desetodnevno u Novom Sadu, s prekidom od augusta 1871. do maja 1872. Đorđe Popović je pokrenuo i uređivao ovaj časopis od prvog broja do augusta 1871.[2]

Za korespondentnog članka Društva srpske slovesnosti izabran je 21. januara 1862. Za dopisnog člana Srpskog učenog društva imenovan je od osnutka 29.maja 1864. Za redovitog člana izabran je 30. januara 1885. i to u Odboru za filozofske i filološke nauke. Počasni član Srpske kraljevske akademije postao je 15. novembra 1892[1].

Daničareva ulica u Beogradu (opština Vračar) nosi ime po Popovićevom nadimku.

Dela

Daničar je poznat kao autor prvog prevoda Don Kihota na [srpski jezik (1895-96, Beograd, Zadužbina Ilije Milosavljevića Kolarca, 4 sv.)[3]. To je istovremeno bio prvi prevod na jedan od južnoslovenskih jezika[4]. Po sopstvenom priznanju, Daničar je počeo da uči španski da bi čitao Don Kihota, koga je prevodio decenijama[5].
