Ljubuško polje kod Vitine

Ljubuško polje je kraško polje u Bosni i Hercegovini. Predstavlja prijelaznu zonu između Imotsko-Bekijskog polja i doline rijeke Neretve. Ime je dobilo po Ljubuškom, najvećem naselju na obodu polja. Dio polja uz naselje Vitinu naziva se Vitinsko polje, a dio uz naselje Veljaci naziva se Veljačko polje. Rastok i Beriš su takođe dijelovi polja Dugačko je 10 kilomera, a široko između 2,5 i 3 kilometra i zahvata površinu od oko 25 km². Okruženo je vapnenačkim brdima Buturovica i Jurjevica. Najveći vodeni tok je rijeka Trebižat, koja u polje dolazi pod imenom Mlade. Na na istočnom dijelu protiče potok Proboj, dok se sredinom polja pruža tok Vrioštice, koja tipičnim vrelom u kršu izbija u Vitini, a ulijeva se u Mlade u selu Lisice. Ostali vodotoci su: Parilo, Modra matica, Brza voda, Voša sa vodopadom Koćuša.

Prosječna nadmorska visina od 120 m. i blizina Jadrana, odlikuju polje sredozemnom klimom. Ljeti su česte suše, a tokom jeseni ima obilnih padavina. Aluvijalno tlo oko riječnih tokova pogodno je za uzgoj vinove loze, povrća, a u posljednje vrijeme i pamuka.[1][2]

Ljubuško polje je najveće pojedinačno područje koje se navodnjava u Bosni i Hercegovini, uglavnom gravitacijom.[3] Za navodnjavanje se koriste odvojenim kanali od kojih se neki koriste više od 100 godina.[4]

Sa obiljem vode, bogatstvom flore i faune, polje je bilo nastanjeno u prahistorijsko doba, o čemu svjedoče arheološki nalazi koji se čuvaju u Muzeju Franjevačkoga samostana Humac, osnovanom 1884. god. Prvi poznati stanovnici bili su Iliri. Područje je među prvima ušlo u sastav rimske države[5] i postalo vojno središte iz kojeg su Rimljani štitili jadransku obalu.
