Сезон 1916/17 стал для «Манчестер Юнайтед» вторым сезоном в военной лиге Ланкшарира, организованной после отмены официальных турниров в Футбольной лиге в связи с началом войны[1].

В Главном турнире (Principal Tournament) команда выступала в секции Ланкшарира, которая состояла из 16 команд, игравших 30 матчей. Во Вторичном турнире (Subsidiary Tournament) команда выступала в группе D, в которой было 4 команды[2]. Матчи в этих турнирах считаются неофициальными и не включаются в статистику игроков и клуба.

8 августа 1916 года рядовой Оскар Линксон, выступавший за «Манчестер Юнайтед» с 1908 по 1913 годы, пропал без вести во время битвы при Гиймоне[англ.] в ходе боевой операции на Сомме. Его тело не было найдено, но он считается погибшим в этой битве[3].

3 мая 1917 года младший сержант 8-го батальона Восточного Суррея Сэнди Тернбулл погиб в битве при Аррасе. Его тело не было найдено. Сэнди Тернбулл выступал за «Манчестер Юнайтед» с 1906 по 1915 годы, сыграв за клуб 247 матчей и забив 101 гол[4][5].
