Маргиноцефалы[1] (лат. Marginocephalia, буквально: краеголовые, каёмчатоголовые) — клада птицетазовых динозавров из подотряда церапод, известных с верхней юры по верхний мел.

Описание

Клада введена Полом Серено в 1986 году[2], чтобы объединить цератопсов и пахицефалозавров на основе четырёх синапоморфий, включающих узкий выступ теменной кости, задний выступ чешуйчатой кости, короткое предчелюстное нёбо, короткий заднелобковый отросток и утраченный лобковый симфиз. Серено рассматривал маргиноцефал, как сестринский таксон орнитопод (эуорнитопод по Серено) внутри подотряда церапод. Альтернативный взгляд гласит, что маргиноцефалы могли произойти от орнитопод, возможно, от гипсилофодонтов. Если это так, то цераподы могут оказаться проблематичным таксоном. Маргиноцефалы могут быть переопределены, как узловой таксон, включающий два других узловых таксона цератопсов и пахицефалозавров и всех потомков их последнего общего предка[3].

Анатомические характеристики членов клады очень разнообразны. Голова большая, крепкая, затылок широкий, формируется по крайней мере начальный гребень, клюв узкий, глаза не очень большие. Хвосты варьируются от длинных до достаточно коротких. Полностью двуногие или четырёхногие, конечности согнуты и приспособлены к бегу. Пальцев передних конечностей от трёх до пяти, на концах маленькие тупые когти или копыта. Задние лапы не грацильные с умеренным скоростным потенциалом, по четыре длинных пальца. Щипали зелень на нижнем и среднем ярусах. Защита — бег и агрессивный бой[4].
