Томас Кавалье-Смит[2][3] (Кавалир-Смит[4]) (англ. Thomas Cavalier-Smith; 21 октября 1942, Лондон — 19 марта 2021[5]) — английский биолог-эволюционист, профессор эволюционной биологии в Оксфордском университете. Основные публикации касаются классификации протистов. Автор таксономической системы, классифицирующей всех эукариот на два надцарственных монофилетических таксона — Unikonta и Bikonta[6][7].

Биография

Родился в 1942 году в Лондоне в семье Алана Хейлса Спенсера и Мэри Мод Кавалье-Смитов. Обучался в Норвичской школе[англ.]. Получил степени бакалавра и магистра искусств в Кембриджском университете (Колледж Гонвилл-энд-Киз). Продолжил образование в Королевском колледже Лондона на кафедре биофизики. Доктор философии с 1967 года, диссертация о развитии органелл у хламидомонады Рейнгардта (англ. Organelle development Chlamydomonas reinhardtii), научный руководитель — Джон Рэндалл (1905—1984).

С 1969 года работал в должности лектора (англ. lecturer) на кафедре биофизики Королевского колледжа Лондона. В 1984 году был повышен до преподавателя (англ. reader). С 1989 года — профессор ботаники в Университете Британской Колумбии (Канада). В 1999 годe стал сотрудником Оксфордского университета, с 2000 года — профессор эволюционной биологии. Скончался от рака.
