Дицинодон (лат. Dicynodon) — род пермских дицинодонтов. Первый из описанных представителей группы. Вид Dicynodon lacerticeps был описан Р. Оуэном в 1845 году из позднепермских (тогда считавшихся триасовыми) отложений Южной Африки.

Название рода (в переводе с латинского «двуклыковые») отражает наличие двух крупных верхних клыков-бивней в верхней челюсти.

Первоначально дицинодон считался чем-то вроде промежуточной формы между ящерицами и черепахами. В частности, скульптуры Б. У. Хокинса в Кристалл-Палас в Лондоне изображают дицинодонов как черепах с клыками. Позднее стало ясно, что животное относится к синапсидам. Для дицинодона был предложен особый отряд аномодонты (Anomodontia) («страннозубые»). Одно время практически всех дицинодонтов с клыками относили к роду Dicynodon. Сейчас объём рода сокращен до примерно 50—53 видов. Вероятно, часть из них относится к другим родам.

Описание

Все виды рода сохраняют лишь два верхних клыка, другие зубы отсутствуют. Возможен половой диморфизм — более крупные клыки у самцов. Форма черепа у разных видов различна, что может отражать различные особенности питания. Вероятно, все дицинодоны были растительноядными или всеядными.

Длина черепа разных видов от 9 до 45 см. Тело массивное, длинное. Ноги чаще короткие, массивные, лапы когтистые. Распространение рода крайне широко — по времени оно охватывает промежуток от средней перми (зона Tapinocephalus) до самого конца пермской эпохи. Самые верхние слои перми в Южной Африке носят название зоны Dicynodon из-за преобладания остатков этого рода. Относительно недавно эту зону называли зоной Daptocephalus, но крупный вид Daptocephalus leontops сейчас также относится к роду Dicynodon. Не исключено существование рода и в самых низах триаса.

Виды рода Dicynodon могли быть предками триасовых дицинодонтов (в частности, Dicynodon trigonocephalus может быть близок к предкам листрозавра).

Места находок

Останки дицинодонов обнаружены на территории Бразилии, США, Китая, Индии, Танзании, Замбии, ЮАР, Шотландии. Дицинодон описан и из поздней перми (северодвинская эпоха) России. Российский вид Dicynodon trautscholdi был выделен В. П. Амалицким на основании находок в знаменитом местонахождении Соколки в деревне Новинки на Малой Северной Двине.
