То́мас Гёртин[1], Ге́ртин[2] (англ. Thomas Girtin; 18 февраля 1775 — 9 ноября 1802) — английский акварелист и гравёр, один из основоположников национальной школы акварели.

Биография

Томас Гёртин родился в Саутуарке в 1775 году. Потомок (по отцу) бежавших из Франции гугенотов. Его отец умер, когда Томас был ещё ребенком. Его мать вышла замуж за мистера Воана, модельера. Учился, как и Тёрнер, у Томаса Молтона, а также Эдуарда Дейеса. Вместе с Тёрнером, с которым Гёртин был в дружеских отношениях, зарабатывал раскрашиванием старинных гравюр. С 1794 г. работы Гёртина выставлялись в Королевской академии художеств. Зарисовки пейзажей и архитектурных сооружений работы Гёртина быстро получили признание. Он предпринял несколько поездок по различным регионам Англии, а на рубеже 1801—1802 годов провёл почти полгода в Париже, оставив серию акварелей и карандашных рисунков, которые он по возвращении в Лондон перевёл в гравюры, составившиеся сборник «Двадцать видов Парижа и его окрестностей» (англ. Twenty Views in Paris and its Environs). Умер у себя в студии за мольбертом (предположительно от туберкулёза). В 1800 году Гёртин женился на Мэри Энн Борретт, шестнадцатилетней дочери зажиточного городского ювелира.

Творчество

Ранние работы Гёртина традиционны для английской школы пейзажных зарисовок, однако постепенно он разработал более масштабный стиль романтического пейзажа.
