Renée Richards (Nova Iorque, 19 de agosto de 1934) é uma ex-tenista transexual estadunidense, que chegou a ocupar o top 20 na década de 70 após a transição de gênero.

No ano 2000, ela foi incluída no USTA Eastern Tennis Hall of Fame.[1]

História

Nascido com o nome de Richard Raskind, em 1934, o jovem foi um dos melhores juvenis no fim da década de 40 e capitão do time de tênis de seu colégio. Richard também liderou a equipe da universidade de Yale em 1954. O rapaz ainda se alistou, depois, na Marinha americana.

Em 1960, disputou a chave masculina do US Open, do qual foi derrotado já na primeira rodada. Em 1975 se submeteu a uma cirurgia de mudança de sexo. Em 1977, precisou de uma ação na Suprema Corte de Nova York para garantir seu direito de disputar novamente o US Open - porém, desta vez, na chave feminina - o qual foi derrotada também na primeira rodada.[2]

Renée Richards é uma oftalmologista americana e ex-jogadora de tênis que teve algum sucesso na década de 70 e se tornou mundialmente conhecida após a cirurgia de redesignação de sexo do masculino para o feminino, após a cirurgia bem sucedida ela lutou pelos seus direitos e tentou competir no U.S open de 1976,nesse ano a USTA começou a exigir exames genéticos para as atletas.

Ela desafiou essa política e a suprema corte de Nova Iorque decidiu a seu favor, um caso que deu notoriedade ao direitos dos transgêneros.

Como uma das primeiras atletas profissionais transgênero, ela se tornou porta-voz de atletas transexuais, em 2000 ela foi incluída no hall da fama do tênis, não só pelas jogadas e sim por ter vencido os preconceitos e conquistando seu espaço e reconhecimento.

Após sua aposentadoria como jogadora ela virou treinadora da Martina Navratilova que ganhou dois títulos de Wimbledon.

Em 1983 Richards publicou sua autobiografia Second Serve (que serviu de base para o telefilme Second Serve), em 2007 lançou No Way Renée: The Second Half Of My Notorius Life, onde ela fala do arrependimento sobre o tipo de fama que o transgenerismo trouxe a ela, que não se arrepende da cirurgia de redesignação mas sim do tipo de situação preconceituosa que ela teve que passar por ser ela mesma, o primeiro livro de Richards serviu de base para o filme principal do Tribecca film Festival de 2011 e conta a história de superação dela
