Cosmo ou cosmos (do grego antigo κόσμος, transl. kósmos, "ordem", "organização", "beleza", "harmonia") é um termo que designa o Universo em seu conjunto, toda a estrutura universal em sua totalidade, desde o microcosmo ao macrocosmo. O cosmo é a totalidade de todas as coisas desse Universo ordenado, desde as estrelas, até as partículas subatômicas. Pode ser estudado na Cosmologia.
O astrônomo Carl Sagan define o termo cosmos como sendo "tudo o que já foi, tudo o que é e tudo que será".
O filósofo grego Pitágoras foi o primeiro a utilizar o termo "cosmos" para referenciar o Universo, talvez querendo se referir ao firmamento de estrelas.
A palavra deriva do termo grego κόσμος (kosmos), que literalmente significa "bem ordenado" ou "ornamentado" e metaforicamente "mundo", e é contrária ao conceito de caos (feio ou desordenado). Hoje, a palavra é geralmente usada como sinônimo para "Universo". A palavra "cosmético" se origina da mesma raiz. Em muitas línguas eslavas como o russo, polonês, búlgaro e sérvio, a palavra kosmos (космос) também significa espaço sideral.
Cosmologia é o estudo do cosmos em vários dos significados, dependendo do contexto. Todas as cosmologias têm em comum uma tentativa de compreender a ordem implícita e beleza dentro do todo do ser. Desta forma, a maioria das religiões e sistemas filosóficos têm uma cosmologia.
Na cosmologia física, o termo cosmos é muitas vezes usado de forma técnica, referindo-se a um contínuo espaço-tempo particular dentro do (postulado) Universo. Nosso cosmos particular, o Universo observável, é geralmente escrito com inicial maiúscula (Cosmos). A Cosmologia também estuda o Universo desde sua criação, até agora onde o mesmo está em plena expansão, onde cada ponto relacionado a criação do Universo se torna relevante e ponto de questionamentos.
Cosmologia é um ramo da metafísica que lida com a natureza do Universo, uma teoria ou doutrina que descreve a ordem natural do Universo.[1]
Na teologia, o termo pode ser usado para denotar o Universo criado, não incluindo o criador. Na teologia cristã, a palavra também é usada como sinônimo para se referir à "vida mundana" ou "este mundo", em oposição à vida após a morte ou mundo vindouro.
