Polscy nastolatkowie

Młodzież – kategoria społeczna osób młodych[1][2], czyli znajdujących się w stanie przejściowym między dzieciństwem, a dorosłością (dojrzałością)[3][4]. Jej definicje są zróżnicowane pod względem przedziału wiekowego, ponieważ w przeciwieństwie do okresu dojrzewania, okres młodzieńczy jest konstruktem społecznym różnie rozumianym w zależności od czasu i kultury. Jego początku i końca nie można połączyć z określonymi czynnościami, takimi jak podjęcie nieodpłatnej pracy lub nawiązywanie relacji seksualnych[5].

Pod względem faz rozwoju człowieka przyjmuje się granice wiekowe dla młodzieży między 11. a 19. rokiem życia. W okresie wiekowym, do którego zalicza się młodzież następuje gwałtowne dojrzewanie, wzrost. Jest to okres, w którym człowiek rozwija swoje umiejętności, zainteresowania, wiedzę o świecie (praktyczną i teoretyczną). Młodzieży przysługują prawa ustalone przez władze państwa (ograniczone władzą opiekuna).

Fazy rozwojowe

Pojęcie młodzieży odnosimy w psychologii przede wszystkim do okresu dorastania. Okres ten jest ogromnie zróżnicowany u różnych osób i trudno wyznaczyć granice wiekowe dotyczące wszystkich jednostek w danej kulturze. W celach porządkowych przyjęto jednak granice między 11. a 19. rokiem życia. Początek tego okresu wyznaczają zmiany natury anatomiczno-fizjologicznej, jakie zachodzą w organizmie. One właśnie sygnalizują rozpoczęcie fazy dorastania. Fazę tę kończy osiągnięcie biologicznej dojrzałości: zdolności do dawania życia. Fazę pierwszą nazywa się także fazą pokwitania lub pubertalną.

Fazę drugą wyznaczają zmiany w sferze psychicznej, przede wszystkim w obrazie własnej osoby. Zakończenie tej fazy wiąże się z osiągnięciem dojrzałości psychicznej, czyli ze zdolnością do decydowania o sobie, odkryciem sensu własnego istnienia i odnalezieniem własnej tożsamości.
