Jeremy Bentham nasquèt en febrièr de 1748 a Houndsditch, filh d'una rica e important familha istorica de jutges, e moriguèt a Londres lo 6 de junh de 1832. Es lo paire de l'utilitarisme e dempuèi jove mostrèt un grand interès pels estudis.

Vesent sa facilitat per aprendre foguèt enviat a 12 ans a "The Queen's College, Oxford", a 15 ans acabèt la carrièra e a 18 ans obtenguèt lo master que li permetèt d'exercir la profession de jurista. Quand comencèt de trabalhar dins una associacion importanta d'avocats de Londres e d'Anglatèrra, comprenguèt gravas errors de la legislacion d'Anglatèrra dins lo sègle XVIII, e dempuèi alara que dintrèt dins aquela associacion cerquèt una nòva politica legislativa e de reformas socialas que favoririán los plasers de la majoritat e serián mai utils per la populacion. Se pòt considerar que son los començaments de son utilitarisme.
