Vestfold Hills

Vestfold Hills er et område på om lag 500 km² med lave, isfrie fjellrygger beliggende på Ingrid Christensen Kyst i Princess Elizabeth Land, Antarktis. Fjellryggene varierer i høyde mellom 30 og 100 meter, men høyeste punkt måler 159 moh.^[1] Området utgjøres av tre halvøyer delt av trange fjorder.^[2]

Historie

Vestfold Hills ble oppdaget på Lars Christensens Thorshavn-ekspedisjon 1934–1935 av kaptein Klarius Mikkelsen, og det ble foretatt ilandstigning her 20. februar 1935. Fjellryggene ble kalt opp etter Vestfold, hjemfylket til «Thorshavn» og hovedsetet for den norske hvalfangsten i Sørishavet.^[2]

Området ble kartlagt ved bruk av flyfotografering på den fjerde Thorshavn-ekspedisjonen i 1936–1937.^[2] Det var leid inn et fly av typen Stinson Reliant med en aksjonsradius på ca. 1 200 km, og flyger var Viggo Widerøe. Hubert Wilkins foretok også landinger her i 1939, og han oppførte en steinvarde på Walkabout Rocks med en boks som inneholder en beskrivelse av hans visitt. Denne varden er står på Antarktistraktatens liste over historiske steder og kulturminner i Antarktis.

Biologi

Vestfold Hills har en unik biologi med flere innsjøer, både med ferskvann og med saltvann. Noen av de saltholdige er mer enn 13 ganger så salte som sjøvann, og har frysepunkt ned mot -18°C. Om sommeren kan vannet i de saltholdige innsjøene nå 35°C fordi isen på overflaten stenger solenergien inne. Dette gir opphav til et høytt spesialisert og sjeldent liv, blant annet av alger og bakterier.
