Université de Pont-à-Mousson ble grunnlagt den 5. desember 1572 i hertugdømmet Lorraine i Pont-à-Mousson, og ble flyttet i 1769 til Nancy.

Historie

Idet det ikke lot seg gjennomføre å forhindre at reformasjonen fikk utbredelse også i Lorraine, forsøkte den katolske kirke å holde på sin innflytelse i området og tilrettelegge for rekatolisering av de områder som var blitt protestantiske. Et av de tiltak som ble benyttet var jesuittenes grun nleggelse av et universitet i Pont-à-Mousson.[1]

Hertug Karl III og hans nevø kardinal Charles de Lorraine-Guise ble sammen enige om stifelsen av universitetet, som de ønsket seg halvveis mellom Metz og Nancy. Pave Gregor XIII nølte en tid, men bestemte seg så for denne fordelaktige stiftelse og utstedte i 5. desember 1572 opprettelssbullen In Supereminenti som grunnlag for kollegium og universitet der.[2][3]

Universitetet omdattet fire fakulteter, hvorav to - kunst og teologi - var direkte understilt jesuittene, mens de to andre - rettslære og medisin - hadde sekulær ledelse; det overordnede ansvar lå hos jesuittene.[4].

Etter at området ble innordnet under Frankrike i 1766, etter Stanislaus I Leszczyńskis død, ble universitetet i 1769 ved edikt gitt av kong Ludvig XV flyttet til Nancy.
