Trunking

Trunking er en teknologi for radiosamband brukt til å maksimere den tilgjengelige kapasiteten[1] på et sambandsnettverk ved å gi grupper av brukere en logisk «samtalegruppe» på deling i stedet for en egen radiofrekvens.

Den enkeltes radiosett sender datapakker til en datamaskin som opererer på en egen fast frekvens, en såkalt kontrollkanal, for å be om samband for en spesifikk samtalegruppe. Kontrolleren sender et digitalt radiosignal til alle radioer som overvåker denne samtalegruppa og instruerer radioene om automatisk frekvensbytte for å følge kommunikasjonen. Etter at brukeren er ferdig med å snakke, returnerer radioene til å overvåke kontrollkanalen for ytterligere sendinger.

Denne organiseringa gjør at flere grupper av brukere kan dele på en liten mengde radiofrekvenser uten å høre hverandres samtaler. System med frekvenshopping har som hovedfunksjon å spare på avgrenset kanalkapasitet og gir også anledning for andre avanserte funksjoner for brukerne.
