Streymnes på Commons

Streymnes (dansk: Strømnæs) er en bygd på Færøyene. Streymnes ligger på Streymoy, langs sundet som skiller øya fra Eysturoy. Mellom Streymes og nabobygda Hvalvík springer Stórá ut. Det er et lakseførende vassdrag.[2]

Streymnes tilhører Hvalvíkar sókn, som lenge også var en egen kommune. I 2005 ble Hvalvíkar kommuna innlemmet i Sunda kommuna.

Streymnes er en av de fire gamle markatalsbygdene langs Sundini.[3] Den er første gang omtalt i skriftlige kilder som Strommennes i jordeboken fra 1584.[4] Det strømsterke sundet har antagelig gitt navn til både bygda og øya den ligger på.[5]

Den første hvalfangststasjonen på Færøyene ble bygget på Gjánoyri nord for Streymnes, like ved sognegrensen til Haldórsvík, i 1893. Den ble bygget av det norske hvalfangstrederiet Urd.[3][6] Driften opphørte i 1925.[7]
