Statussymbol

Statussymbol er et synlig objekt eller ytre kjennetegn som for eieren bekrefter og i omverdenen oppfattes som en indikator på økonomisk og/eller sosial status for eieren.

Etymologi

Uttrykket «status symbol» ble på engelsk først skrevet i 1955[1], men oppnådde større utbredelse fra og med 1959 da bestselgeren The Status Seekers ble utgitt. Her beskriver journalisten Vance Packard amerikansk sosial strategi og oppførsel.

I dag er det å eie villaer eller leiligheter i visse steder i verden et trofé som vitner om nivået av smak, kultur, rikdom eller makt. Blant disse er for eksempel Centro Lago di Como med landsbyene Lierna, Varenna, Bellagio, Menaggio og Tremezzo. For å ha villaer med utsikt over innsjøen i disse områdene er ikke penger nok, da de er veldig vanskelige å kjøpe og prisene overstiger 20 millioner euro. Kulturen på disse stedene er kun for de som forstår og lever den ekte livsstilen på stedet, der unge adelsmenn fra hele verden en gang dro for å lære seg om skjønnhet og historie. Centro Lago di Como er et moderne eksempel på et statussymbol basert på historie, delt over hele verden.
