Småen (originaltittel: The Kid) er en amerikansk spillefilm fra 1921 av og med Charlie Chaplin i rollen.

Filmen var den første helaftens stumfilmkomedien og også inneholdt drama. Den mest kjente scenen er hvor Chaplin i rollen som landstrykeren desperat prøver å få tilbake den lille gutten fra barnevernet, og deres følelsesmessige sterke gjenforening. Filmen skal være preget av Chaplins egne emosjonelle reaksjoner over sin egen førstefødte barn som døde rett før innspillingene startet. Den forteller om fattigdom og bygger på Chaplins egne erfaringer med en nådeløs fattigtjeneste i Chaplins barndom i London.

Handling

Filmen innledes ved at en ugift mor forlater sitt nyfødte barn i en rik families bil, og håper at barnet skal kunne få et bedre liv hos dem enn hva hun kan gi det. Hun forlater bilen, og går bort i en park, uvitende om at to tyver stjeler bilen. Men hun angrer, og går tilbake, men da er bilen og barnet borte.

Tyvene oppdager i mellomtiden at de har med et barn i baksetet, og forlater barnet i et slumområde hvor en forbipasserende mann finner det, og tar hånd om det.

Noen år senere har kvinnen blitt en berømt skuespiller, men har aldri kunne glemme sin lille gutt. Gutten og mannen lever i mellomtiden et fattig liv. De tjener til livets opphold ved at den lille gutten kaster stein gjennom folks vinduer og knuser dem, og mannen selger dem nye.

Fattigvesenet oppdager hvordan de lever og forsøker å ta gutten bort fra mannen. Dette innleder en jakt over hele byen, hvor mannen fortvilet prøver å løpe fra fattigvesenets bil. Han får tak i barnet og de kommer seg unna sosialtjenesten.

Gjennom en rekke ulike tilfeller, kommer barnets biologiske mor i kontakt med dem og forstår at dette er hennes sønn. Hun adopterer barnet og tilbyr mannen å bo sammen med henne og barnet.
