Sand

Sand er sorterte og oftest ganske rundslipte bergartsfragmenter. Sand finnes som elveavsetninger på elvesletter og i deltaer, som sandstrender avsatt av bølger og havstrømmer langs kysten, eller som vindavsetninger (sanddyner) i tørre og vegetasjonsfattige områder, og finpartikulær sand kan betegnes som støv. Sand har ofte et høyt innhold av harde mineraler som kvarts.

I løsmasser klassifiseres fraksjoner med en diameter på mellom 0,06 mm og 2 mm som sand. Finere fraksjoner enn 0,06 mm betegnes silt og leire, mens grovere fraksjoner på mellom 2 mm og 64 mm betegnes grus, og de groveste fraksjonene som er grovere enn 64 mm betegnes morene. Det finnes flere systemer for klassifikasjon av løsmasser, og grensene mellom fraksjonene kan variere. Over lengre tid kan sand bli omdannet til sandstein. Det viktigste materiale i nesten alle sandsorter er kvarts.

Sand brukes som tilslag i betong, som slipemateriale i sandpapir og ved sandblåsing og som strøsand for å øke friksjonen mot glatt underlag.
