Fords samlebånd i 1913

Samlebånd er et hjelpemiddel ved forskjellige typer av masseproduksjon. Samlebåndsfabrikasjon innebærer i prinsippet at arbeidere eller maskiner står fast stasjonert ved en bestemt arbeidsplass, mens et bånd transporterer produktet fra arbeidsplass til arbeidsplass. På hver arbeidsplass utføres én eller flere enkle arbeidsprosesser, som f.eks. å montere én eller flere delkomponenter på produktet. Medarbeiderne blir på denne måten spesialisert på noen få operasjoner, som kan utføres hurtig og effektivt. Slik kan man oppnå en økning av produksjonen.

«Oppfinnelsen» av samlebåndet

Både Henry Ford og Ransom E. Olds krediteres ofte for «oppfinnelsen» av samlebåndet. Som det er tilfelle med de fleste oppfinnelser, har mange mennesker bidratt til utviklingen av samlebåndet. En forutsetning for samlebåndet er produksjon av ensartede produkter med standardiserte deler. Dette er en tanke som går helt tilbake til det 18. århundre, og som det derfor vil være vanskelig å tilskrive en enkeltperson.

Fords første samlebånd begynte å benytte masseproduksjon på eller rundt den 1. april 1913 etter 5 års utviklingsarbeid. Produksjonen ble delt opp i en lang rekke enkle arbeidsprosesser, så arbeidskraften ikke behøvde en lang faglig opplæring. Idéen ble først forsøkt med delkomponenter og kort tid etter på hele chassis. Selv om det er vanskelig å si at Henry Ford har «oppfunnet» samlebåndet, er det imidlertid riktig at han spilte en vesentlig rolle i utbredelsen av samlebåndet i det 20. århundre. Uttrykket «fordisme» brukes i vid utstrekning i industrialiseringsperioden, og henspiller på en økt tro på, og overgang til samlebåndsproduksjon.
