SS «Pehr Ugland» var en norskeid stålbark bygget av Grangemouth Dock Yard Co. i Alloa i Skottland i 1891. Skipet regnes som det siste eksisterende norske barkskip i fraktfart.[1] Siste seilas var i august 1929.[2]

SS «Pehr Ugland» var bestilt av Jens Lassen Ugland fra Arendal.[3] Ved leveringen i mai 1891 ble skipet Arendals første bark bygget i stål. Det var også Arendals største skip.

Første verdenskrig

Skipet seilte under 1. verdenskrig da det var gode tider for norsk shipping. I april 1916 klarte det å seile fra Plymouth til Barbados på kun 23 dager, noe Norsk handels- og sjøfartstidende meldte at måtte være rekord.[4] Samme år ble skipet solgt til Seilskibsselskabet Hippalos i København for 525 000 kroner.

Mellomkrigstiden

I 1919 ble skipet kjøpt tilbake til Norge. SS «Pehr Ugland» fortsatte å seile i ti år til og ble dermed den siste barken som seilte i fraktfart under norsk flagg. 26. august 1929 var det imidlertid slutt. Barken ankret opp ved Torbjørnskjær utenfor Hvaler og alle mann sagt opp. Den internasjonale krisen samme år, gjorde at skipet ble lagt i opplag. Diskusjoner om å gjøre skipet om til et skoleskip i Stavanger strandet og i 1932 ble skipet solgt som lekter til A/S Norsk Soyamelfabrik i Larvik. I 1937 ble skipet sendt til København for opphugging.

Arkivet

Arkivmateriale etter SS «Pehr Ugland» oppbevares i dag på KUBEN i Arendal. I samlingen som kalles Fartøysarkivet finnes det flere arkivesker med dokumenter og protokoller fra SS «Pehr Ugland». Arkivmaterialet omfatter tre skipsjournaler, brev, regnskap og andre skipspapirer. Materialet dekker perioden fra 1891 til 1929.
