Rufane Shaw Donkin (født 1773, død 1. mai 1841) var en britisk general og fungerte en stund som guvernør i Kappkolonien. Hans far døde som general i 1821 etter å ha tjent med nesten alle britiske kommandanter fra Wolfe til Gage.

Bakgrunn

Rufne Shaw Donkin var eldst i søskenflokken og fikk sin første kommisjon i sin fars regiment.

Militær

Han sluttet seg til regimentet da han var 14 år, med åtte års ansiennitet som løytnant. Han ble kaptein i 1793 og var i aktiv tjeneste i De vestindiske øyer i 1794 og som major i 1796. 25 år gammel ble han oberstløytnant og i 1798 utmerket han seg da han ledet en lett bataljon i Ostend–felttoget. Han tjente sammen med William Cathcart i slaget ved København i 1807, og han fikk to år senere kommandoen over en brigade i hæren i Portugal som han ledet i slagene ved Porto og Talavera.

Han ble snart overført som kvartermestergeneral til en kommando i Middelhavet hvor han tjente fra 1810 til 1813 og deltok i felttogene i Catalonia. Sir John Murrays mislykkede forsøk ved Tarragona involverte ikke Donkin viss råd ble ignorert av den britiske kommandanten.

Generalmajor Donkin dro i juli 1815 til India og utmerket seg som divisjonskommandant i Francis Rawdon-Hastings' operasjoner mot Mahrattariket (1817–1818). Han tok dødsfallet av sin unge kone svært tungt, og han dro på sykepermisjon til Kapp det gode håp. Fra 1820 til 1821 administrerte han Kappkolonien med suksess og oppkalte havnen i Algoa Bay Port Elizabeth etter sin avdøde kone. Han ble generalløytnant i 1821.

Resten av sitt liv tilbrakte han i litterært og politisk arbeid. Han var en av de opprinnelige mennene i Royal Geographical Society, medlem av Royal Society og mange andre kunnskapsrike foreninger. Hans teorier om Niger–elvas leie, publisert under tittelen Dissertation on the Course and Probable Termination of the Niger (London 1829), gjorde ham involvert i en del kontroverser. Fra 1832 av satt han i House of Commons og ble Surveyor-General of the Ordnance.

Han begikk selvmord i Southampton 1. mai 1841. Han var da general, og han var oberst i 11. infanteriregiment.

Rufane Shaw Donkin var fetter av Charles Collier Michell, surveyor–general i Kappkolonien.
