Roland Matthes på Commons

Roland Matthes (født 17. januar 1950 i Pößneck, død 20. desember 2019) var en tysk svømmer som deltok i de olympiske leker i 1968 i Mexico by, 1972 i München og 1976 i Montréal.

Matthes ble olympisk mester i svømming to ganger under Sommer-OL 1968 i Mexico by. Han vant både 100- og 200 meter rygg. Han var også med på det østtyske stafettlaget som kom på andreplass på 4 × 100 meter medley.

Fire år senere, under sommer-OL 1972, vant han to gull-, én sølv- og én bronsemedalje. Han vant 100- og 200 meter rygg og fikk sølv på 4 × 100 meter medley og bronse på 4 × 100 meter fri.

Matthes satte 21 verdensrekorder, ble verdensmester tre ganger, to 1973 i Beograd og én i 1975 i Cali. Han ble kåret til årets mannlige sportsutøver i Øst-Tyskland sju ganger: 1967, 1968, 1969, 1970, 1971, 1973 og 1975. Han ble kalt for svømmesportens Rolls-Royce.
