Preludium i ciss-moll (Rakhmaninov)

Det mektige temaet blir i den andre A-delen notert ved hjelp av hele fire notesystemer (de to øverste er for høyre hånd, og de to nederste er for venstre).

Preludium i ciss-moll, op. 3 nr. 2 (også kjent som ciss-moll-preludiet), er en av Sergej Rakhmaninovs aller mest kjente komposisjoner. Det er et tredelt (A-B-A) preludium for soloklaver i tonearten ciss-moll, og var med i en samling kalt Morceaux de fantaisie (fransk for Fantasistykker), op. 3, komponert i 1892. Preludiet kommer her ut som nummer to i rekken av i alt fem mindre pianostykker. Premieren ble foretatt av komponisten selv den 20. september 1892 på festivalen Moscow Electrical Exhibition. En anmelder skrev etter konserten at stykket hadde "skapt begeistring" hos publikum, og populariteten økte raskt ved hver framføring etter dette. Selv om det er et ungdomsverk (komponisten skrev det da han var 19 år), forble preludiet Rakhmaninovs aller mest berømte komposisjon for solo piano inntil hans død.

Oppbygning

Preludiet er spesielt kjent for sitt svært enkle, suggererende og mediterende tema (de nedadgående tonene A - G# - C#) som går igjen i hele stykket. A-delen er rolig og avbalansert, og er enkelte steder notert helt ned til piano pianissimo (ppp) i styrkegrad. Etter kort tid går dette over i en stadig raskere og mer desperat B-del, hvor kromatiske elementer spiller en betydelig rolle. B-delen fører til en nær identisk gjentakelse av A-delen; men denne gang med svært massive akkorder i både venstre og høyre hånd, notert helt opp til forte fortisissimo (ffff) i styrke. Preludiet ender tilbaketrukket i en klokke-aktig coda, sentrert rundt ciss-moll. Partiet minner om åpningen fra hans senere klaverkonsert nr. 2, bare at starten på konserten øker i styrke og intensitet, mens preludiet avtar.

Rakhmaninov skulle noen år senere utgi to sett med totalt 23 preludier for å komplettere sin egen versjon av totalt 24 preludier (i alle dur- og molltonearter), i tråd med hva flere store komponister hadde gjort før ham, blant annet Bach, Chopin, Alkan og Skrjabin. Ingen av de nye preludiene skulle likevel komme i nærheten av å vippe ciss-moll-preludiet ned fra tronen når det gjaldt popularitet blant publikum. Av de resterende preludiene er g-moll-preludiet (op. 23 nr. 5) det som oftest er å høre på konsert.
