Prayut Chan-o-cha (thai: ประยุทธ์ จันทร์โอชา, født 21. mars 1954) er en thailandsk politiker, pensjonert hærsjef i Thailands hær, tidligere leder av Det nasjonale rådet for fred og orden og Thailands tidligere statsminister etter å ha tatt over makten i et statskupp i 2014. Mellom 2019 og 2023 var han samtidig også Thailands forsvarsminister.[7][8]

Han erklærte i juli 2023 at han pensjonerte seg fra vervet som statsminister etter å ha tapt parlamentsvalget i 2023.[9] Han ble utnevnt til medlem av det kongelige råd i Thailand den 29. november 2023.[10]

Liv og virke

Prayut kom ikke til regjeringsmakten på demokratisk måte, men stilte i valget i 2019. Den engelskspråklige thailandske dagsavisen The Nation hevdet at han hadde en urettferdig fordel i forhold til de andre demokratiske partiene og mente at formålet med valget var å skulle legitimere og forlenge grepet hans om makten.[11] En av hovedmotstanderne i valget, Sudarat Keyuraphan fra partiet Pheu Thai, henviste til hvordan grunnloven var utformet for å favorisere Prayut da hun uttalte at «Prayut har 250 senatorer, men folket har tomme lommer».[12]

Etter valget ble han den 5. juni bekreftet som statsminister av det nye parlamentet med et kombinert flertall av stemmer i det folkevalgte Representantenes hus og det militærutnevnte Senatet.[13] Han fratrådte deretter som leder av militærstyret den 15. juli.[14]

Prayut har overlevd fire mistillitsforslag på to år i en nasjonalforsamling som opposisjonen mente ikke gjenspeilte velgernes meninger. Opposisjonen mente at økonomisk ledelse var hans største svakhet. Han ble også anklaget for å ha spionert på politiske motstandere og misbrukt landets budsjett.[15]

Han er medlem av en militærfaksjon i Thailands hær kalt Burapha Payak, eller Østens tigre.[16] Han satt som nestleder av hæren under det blodige opprøret i Thailand i 2010, som ble slått ned av militæret. Sammen med Prawit Wongsuwan og Anupong Paochinda, to andre medlemmer av regjeringen hans, spilte han en nøkkelrolle i å slå ned dette opprøret.[17]

Den 9. januar 2023 ble Prayut formelt medlem av partiet Forent thainasjon (thai: Ruam Thai Sang Chart). Dette partiet har mange medlemmer fra den reaksjonære paraplyorganisasjonen Folkets demokratiske reformkomité, som støtter militærkupp og hadde som formål å fjerne den demokratisk valgte statsministeren Thaksin Shinawatras innflytelse over thailandsk politikk.[18][19]
