Polynesiere er folkegrupper som taler polynesiske språk. De befolker øyer i det sentrale Stillehavet i et område med utstrekning fra Hawaii i nord, til Påskeøya i sørøst og New Zealand i sørvest. Området kalles «den polynesiske triangel».

Polynesierne er etterkommere etter folk tilhørende lapita-kulturen på Tonga og Samoa. Fra det første årtusen spredte polynesierne seg fra Samoa og østover til øygruppene Cookøyene, Marquesasøyene, Selskapsøyene, Tuamotuøyene, Australøyene, Pitcairnøyene og Påskeøya, nordøstover til Hawaii og sørvestover til New Zealand, Kermadecøyene, Chathamøyene og Norfolkøya.[1]

Migrasjonsprossesen, når de ulike øygruppene ble bosatt og i hvilken rekkefølge, er et omdiskutert tema. Arkeologiske funn og lingvistiske analyser kan gi ulike resultater. I Aschehougs verdenshistorie fra 1999 oppgis polynesiernes ankomst til Samoa å ha funnet sted for 3000 år siden, mens de sies å ha nådd Hawaii og Påskeøya omkring år 400 og New Zealand omkring år 800.[2] Nyere arkeologisk forskning anser at spredningen fant sted senere enn det man før har ment, mellom 950 og 1150.[3] Analyser av språkene tyder på at Marquesasøyene ble bosatt først, omkring år 900, deretter Selskapsøyene og Hawaii omkring år 1000.[4] En metaanalyse av arkeologiske radiokarbondata publisert i 2011 satte ekspansjonen til øyene øst i Polynesia til mellom 1025 og 1120 for Selskapsøyene og mellom 1190 og 1290 for de øvrige øygruppene, inkludert New Zealand.[5]

Søtpotetens utbredelse viser at polynesierne på et tidspunkt før europeernes ankomst har vært i kontakt med Sør-Amerika.[6]

I tillegg til kjerneområdet i «den polynesiske triangel», finnes det også polynesiske befolkningsgrupper på spredte øyer i Melanesia og Mikronesia. Det gjelder enkeltøyer i Mikronesiaføderasjonen, Papua Ny-Guinea, Salomonøyene, Vanuatu og Ny-Caledonia.[7]
