Pi (også kjent som Pi – Troen på Chaos) er en svart-hvitt amerikansk psykologisk thrillerfilm fra 1998 regissert av Darren Aronofsky, som vant regiprisen på Sundance Film Festival i 1998, samt Independent Spirit Award for «Beste første manus» og Gotham Open Palm Award. Tittelen refererer til den matematiske konstanten π (pi).

Sammendrag

Max Cohen er veldig interessert i tallteori, og tror at alt i naturen kan forstås gjennom tall. Max lider av klasehodepine, ekstrem paranoia, hallusinasjoner og sosial angst. Hans eneste sosiale interaksjoner er med Jenna, en ung jente som er fascinert av hans evne til å utføre komplekse matematiske beregninger. Devi, en ung kvinne som er hans nærmeste nabo, samt Sol Robeson, hans mentor innenfor matematikk. Max forsøker å programmere datamaskinen sin for å finne ut hvilke aksjer som kan være verdt å satse på. Men datamaskinen printer i stedet en utskrift av et tilsynelatende tilfeldig 216-sifret tall, før maskinen krasjer.

Max kaster skuffet hele utskriften. Men neste morgen oppdager han at tallene faktisk har en funksjon, men han klarer ikke finne igjen utskriften. Når Max nevner nummeret, blir Sol nervøs og spør om det inneholdt 216 sifre, og avslører at han kom over det samme tallet for ett par år siden. Han oppfordrer Max til å ta en pause fra arbeidet sitt. Max møter Lenny Meyer, en Hasidisk jøde som arbeider med matematisk forskning på Toraen. Lenny forsøker å bruke Gematri for å gjøre det hebraiske alfabetet om til tall, og forklarer at en del mennesker tror Toraen brukte tall for å lage en kode sendt av Gud. Max konstaterer at noen av begrepene ligner på andre matematiske begreper som for eksempel Fibonacci-sekvensen. Max blir kontaktet av agenter fra et Wall Street-firma, og agent Marcy Dawson tilbyr Max hemmelig informasjon kalt «Ming Mekka» i bytte mot resultatene fra hans arbeid.

Ved hjelp av «Ming Mekka» bruker Max datamaskinen sin til å analysere forskjellige matematiske mønstre i Toraen. Igjen viser maskinen det 216-sifrede nummeret før maskinen krasjer. Max skriver ned tallet, og innser at han kjenner igjen mønsteret. Han gjennomgår en åpenbaring før han besvimer. Når han våkner igjen, ser det ut til at Max kan visualisere mønster i aksje-markedet. Men han opplever også at hodepinen hans intensiveres. Han har også en krangel med Sol, etter at Sol igjen oppfordrer Max til å avslutte det han arbeider med. Dawson og hennes agenter dukker opp igjen, og forsøker å tvinge Max til å forklare nummeret, etter å ha funnet utskriften Max kastet tidligere. Lenny redder ham, og tar ham med til en synagoge i nærheten. De ber Max gi dem det 216-sifrede tallet, i den tro at tallet var ment for dem. Max nekter, og insisterer på at nummeret ble avslørt for ham alene.
