Pass (enhet)

«Pass» har flere betydninger.

Pass (latin: passus; engelsk: pace)[1] er et urgammel lengdemål, men det er ikke kjent om det har vært brukt i Europa og Skandinavia som sådan, herunder også i Norge. Substantivet er kommet til Norge via lavtysk fra fransk, pas, «skritt, passende mål, mengde».[2]

I det gamle Romerriket ble pass kalt passus og inndelt som 1/2 pertica (stang), 2 skritt eller 5 romersk fot, tilsvarende 1,48 meter. Pass er derfor også kjent som 1/1000 romersk mil.[3][4]

Opprinnelsen til uttrykket er et fullt pass (ett skritt med hvert ben eller en omgang) for en voksen mann, altså 2 skritt eller steg. Det latinske ordet passus er således opphavet til uttrykket (melde) pass(e) (stå over, underforstått en omgang) i kortspill.[5]
